Officers of First Pres
The officers of First Presbyterian Church consist of a body of Teaching and Ruling Elders called the Session, and a body of Deacons called the Diaconate. Ruling Elders and Deacons are nominated and elected by the congregation, and must meet the qualifications outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-13
The Session
The Session is the ruling body of our church. It consists of both the Ruling Elders and the Teaching Elders. Ruling Elders are nominated and elected by the congregation, and elections are held annually. Teaching Elders are the pastors of our church. The responsibility of the Session is the spiritual oversight, or shepherding, of our congregation. It is ultimately responsible for all the ministries of our church and helps to ensure that each of them is faithfully being carried out in a God-honoring way.
The Diaconate
The Diaconate is responsible for the administration of mercy, helps, and service; mobilizing our congregation in these ways; and the stewardship of the church’s property and resources. The office of Deacon is one of sympathy and service after the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Diaconate is under the guidance of the Session. Deacons are nominated and elected by the congregation, and elections are held annually.
