Local

We believe Jesus when he said in the book of Acts, “After the Spirit has come upon you, you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth" (Acts 1:8). We are continually confronted with the needs of those around us in Augusta, our “Jerusalem,” and our vision is to impact this city for Christ.

Many First Pres members are actively involved in and leading local ministries. Here are a few highlights:

Hope for Augusta
It is our desire to be especially proactive in Restoring People and Rebuilding Places in our strategic target area in the Olde Town neighborhood bordering our church. Many of our members have responded to the challenge and vision to return to the heart of the city. They have embraced the culture and are giving their lives not only to the community but to restoring the homes to their past glory.

Restoring people doesn’t happen through government programs or beefing up the police department alone. Restoration comes when God starts moving, when the Word of God begins to prick at the heart and shout, “I love you, I forgive you and I will not leave you where you are!”

Vision Pathways
The transition from college to the “real” world can be one of the most difficult transitions a person will face. Vision Pathways was created to help college graduates connect more relationally to like-minded laborers, grow deeper roots in Christ and serve strategic needs in downtown Augusta. The goal of Vision Pathways is to prepare people in their twenties to emerge as vocational kingdom leaders, church leaders and full-time Christian workers around the world.

Vision Pathways is an 11-month program in which recent graduates live together in two homes purchased and restored by the church in the Olde Town section of Telfair Street. The participants work full or part-time jobs during the day, and participate in ministry events and training times in the evening. Training times are focused on building a biblical worldview in the areas of family, vocation, stewardship, calling, church membership and missional living. Participants also meet on Wednesday nights for small group discipleship. Other regular ministry events include a Bible study for downtown kids on Tuesday night at Heritage Academy and a Young Adult Sunday School class on Sundays at 10 a.m. in the Old Medical College Building.

Christ Community Health Services
This year we are partnering with Christ Community Health Services Augusta (CCHSA) by providing a portion of our Bible and Missionary Conference offering to help complete the renovations on the historic Widows Home in downtown Augusta, which will be the clinic’s permanent home. CCHSA is an independent, Christian health center whose mission is to proclaim Christ as Lord and demonstrate his love by providing affordable, quality primary healthcare to the underserved in Augusta, Georgia.  The staff features four full-time physicians and two nurse practitioners. Founders Dr. Robert Campbell is a member of First Presbyterian, as are several other staff members.
